Nicole Barr uses true vitreous enamel (hard-fired glass), which is painstakingly applied by hand to 18 K gold and sterling silver – complemented with the finest diamonds, pearls, and gemstones. True vitreous enamel as used in each jewelry piece, is the beautiful fusion of fired glass with sterling silver, resulting in a lustrous color that will never change. This technique was made famous in the 1900s by jewelers like Lalique, Faberge, and Tiffany. Each design is handmade to order in Raleigh, NC. All enamel jewelry must be handled with care, like a fine glass sculpture. Although it is durable like glass, it will also crack like glass if subjected to excessive abuse.
In this art form, liquid glass is fused to metal at temperatures of up to 1500°F. Our enamel colors come from blends of rare metals like gold, cobalt, and manganese, with each color requiring a different firing temperature. Designs with several colors require multiple firings to create lustrous color that never fades.
