Description

This Frank Reubel routmaline ring features a 1 carat round rubellite (pink tourmaline) with 0.30 cttw. round brilliant cut diamonds swirling around the center and down the sides, all in 14 karat rose gold.

When Dutch traders returned with gems from Sri Lanka in the early 1700’s, they called any unfamiliar stones by the name “turamali” meaning “stones with mixed colors.” Thus, any stone not recognized as a ruby or sapphire simply became a “turmali.”

Since then, science has enabled us to distinguish and classify the gems of this expedition, which included zircons, fancy sapphires, beryls, chrysoberyls, feldspars and garnets, as well as gems belonging to a broad species now known as tourmaline.

Although green is the most common hue, tourmaline naturally occurs in virtually thousands of shades, tones and color combinations—more than any other gemstone.

Rubellite comes from the Latin name ‘rubellus’ that means reddish and rubellites are not just red or shocking pink tourmalines. There is a criterion to be followed and met for a red tourmaline to be called a rubellite tourmaline. Its vivid color ranges from a deep purplish pink to purplish-red, and it is well-known for maintaining its color under different lighting. Not every pink or red tourmaline deserves to be called Rubellite, only the most saturated and vivid colors are given this name.
